About Alex

Alex StrumingerAlex Struminger is an entrepreneur, a technologist and an Internet media strategist. He has also been a publisher, an editor and a published writer both on the Internet and in print. He has been CEO of two corporations: one for profit and one nonprofit. He has started a .COM company, grown organic shiitake mushrooms (Whole Foods was a customer) and run a micro-enterprise loan fund.

He is currently the Principal at Struminger & Company, a strategic digital communications consultancy focused on technology-enabled storytelling, narrative design and the practice of "Storytelling 3.0". He works with organizations large and small, and especially enjoys helping start-ups.

Previously, Mr. Struminger was Senior Advisor on Strategic Internet Projects for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). He worked with UNICEF on strategies for producing, promoting and distributing the organization’s messages and media products through new media channels. He has been the executive producer of several videos and multimedia web sites, as well as global projects that included the Junior 8 (J8) Summit (a youth meeting held in conjunction with the summit of G8 country leaders), involving 8 countries and 7 global regions, a global HIV/AIDS online fundraising and awareness campaign in English, French, Finnish and Korean, and the largest United Nations event to be held in Second Life. He is also an architect of UNICEF’s successful social media strategy. As of the beginning of 2012, UNICEF had more than 1.35 million Facebook fans and over 725,000 Twitter followers.

Although social media and video are central to the current story telling work of communications, it is often the underpinning technology that empowers the content and provides the necessary structure upon which the organization depends to produce and curate that content. Mr. Struminger keeps current with the technologies and processes that support the communications and information work. He enjoys working at the intersection of people, content and technology. He regularly helps clients with projects involving semantic technologies, digital media and content management, and digital strategy.

He has worked with diverse clients including UNICEF, Pfizer, AT&T, the US Department of Commerce, Accenture, the RAND Corporation and the CUNY Institute for Software Design and Development.

Mr. Struminger has been an invited speaker and guest lecturer at United Nations agencies, the Createasphere DAM conference, Henry Stewart DAM NY, the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia, the Asian Development Bank, the City University of New York (CUNY) and the Rhode Island School of Design. His articles have appeared in the Journal of Digital Media Management and CMSWire.com.

Socializing DAM

Sharing innovation in the organization
The success of a digital asset management (DAM) or other collaborative technology platform depends upon system adoption within the organization. This article addresses the social aspect of system user adoption and maintains that ‘socializing’ a new technology is a key component to the long-term success of the project.
